Reps. Julia Letlow and Lisa Blunt Rochester Introduce Bipartisan Resolution Recognizing October as World Menopause Awareness Month

October 24, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Julia Letlow (LA-05) and Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE) introduced a bipartisan resolution that will make October “World Menopause Awareness Month,” and October 18th “World Menopause Day.” The goal of this resolution is to raise awareness of this condition that millions of women around the world naturally experience and increase access to care during menopause and postmenopause.

“Awareness is an essential agent for the future of women’s healthcare decisions. Oftentimes very little guidance is available to women who experience menopause symptoms,” said Rep. Letlow. “I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan legislation with Rep. Rochester to improve awareness, so when women experience menopause they have a much better understanding of what healthcare options and treatments are available to them.”

“Millions of women throughout the United States and throughout the world going through menopause experience this natural, yet often challenging, phase of life without the information or support they need,” said Rep. Blunt Rochester. “That’s why I’m proud to join Rep. Letlow in introducing this bipartisan resolution recognizing World Menopause Day. We know that women can experience the symptoms of menopause for as long as a decade - and that those symptoms can drive women out of the workforce and severely impact their quality of life. We must continue to raise awareness, and ensure that women have the resources they need so that no one suffers in silence.”

The resolution will:

  • Increase global awareness of menopause by designating October as “World Menopause Awareness Month.”
  • Recognize the effect that menopause has on women, and the effect it has on the health and economic development of the U.S.
  • Support training on menopause and menopause treatments for health workers.
  • Increase access to health information and services that promote healthy aging quality of life before, during, and after menopause.
  • Encourage the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Secretary of Defense, and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to
    • Conduct research on menopause and treatments
    • Provide information to women, patients, and health care providers regarding menopause, screening tools, and treatment options with the goal of improving the quality of life of women affected by menopause
    • Update the information, tools, and studies currently available that focus on helping women live with menopause
    • Request the Clerk of the House of Representatives to transmit an enrolled copy of this resolution to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Secretary of Defense, and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
