Letlow Votes for Ratepayer Protection Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 9340, the Ratepayer Protection Act, aimed at shielding consumers from any increased electricity costs associated with data centers or other large-load customers. Congresswoman Julia Letlow supported passage of the bill, which will now head to the Senate.

The legislation directs state utility commissions to adopt standards requiring large customers to pay the total cost of new power, instead of passing new charges along to consumers.

“The Ratepayer Protection Act advances the basic principle that Americans should not pay the cost for increased electricity used by data centers,” said Congresswoman Julia Letlow. “When developed responsibly, these investments can support our economy by creating new jobs and providing more tax revenue that benefits teachers, law enforcement, and local infrastructure. Louisiana has taken concrete steps to ensure data centers finance their own operations, and this bill will create similar standards to protect ratepayers across the nation.”
