Congresswoman Julia Letlow (LA-05) Highlights Library of Congress’ New COVID-19 American History Project Archive Activation Website
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Julia Letlow (LA-05) is proud to highlight a new Library of Congress platform built to honor and memorialize individuals who were lost to COVID-19. In collaboration with StoryCorps, the Library of Congress has launched the COVID-19 Archive Activation website, which will provide everyday Americans a space to share their stories and pay tribute to the loved ones they lost.
Recognizing the need for a lasting memorial platform, Rep. Letlow championed this initiative as her passion project and introduced legislation to support the initiative. The COVID-19 American History Project Act, Rep. Letlow’s inaugural bill passed on the House Floor, tasked the Library of Congress to record, collect, and preserve the stories of American citizens who were directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The collection includes personal histories, testimonials, written materials, and photographs and will be housed in the American Folklife Center.
In addition, the Congresswoman secured funding for the project in the FY2023 Appropriations Act, demonstrating her commitment to preserving the memories of those affected by the pandemic.
“It is crucial we provide a space for everyday Americans to share their stories and ensure they are never forgotten,” said Rep. Letlow. “We must have the ability to look back decades from now and remember more than the politicization of the pandemic. This platform goes beyond politics, allowing individuals to remember the human toll of the pandemic, and honoring those on the frontlines who selflessly served during this dark and challenging time. By providing this platform, we hope to create a lasting tribute to those we’ve lost and showcase the resilience of the human spirit.”
