U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow: America’s 250th is defined by courage, enduring freedoms

Ships from across the country coasted along the Mississippi River in Louisiana’s Sail 250 event. A collection of 250 flags in Monroe guided participants through American history, starting with Betsy Ross’ original flag design and ending with the coveted 50-star banner. 

 

Louisiana joined states nationwide in celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, a moment to remember that we live in the greatest country in the history of the world.

 

As we commemorate our nation's semiquincentennial, there is no better time to honor the sacrifices that secured our freedom, celebrate the opportunities that define the American dream, and reaffirm the faith and values that have guided us for generations. 

 

Behind every freedom we enjoy stands the sacrifice of those who fought to preserve it. Our founding fathers took the ultimate risk with a vision of a country governed by the people, for the people. They created a functioning democracy that stands 250 years later, protected by the men and women of our Armed Forces. Without the courage of our founders and the ongoing sacrifice of our servicemembers, we would not be celebrating this historical milestone. 

 

We owe everything to our veterans, including the troops who fought the original battles for American independence as well as those who’ve fought for freedom in our lifetime. Our veterans are foundational to the story of America, and we must remember and reflect on their enormous contributions as we celebrate 250 years.

 

Though we are a young nation, America has established its place as the freest nation on Earth and the land of limitless opportunity. I will always fight to ensure these individual liberties are never restricted or stripped away. Self-governing prevails in America, and citizens are empowered to achieve the American Dream. As our nation turns 250, we celebrate these enduring principles and the unwavering promise that the people will always have a voice in our democracy.

 

There have been many defining moments over the past 250 years, but America’s faith story is at the foundation. As the Declaration of Independence states, we are endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights. Our rights come from God, not the government, which our founders understood and wove into the fabric of our young nation.

 

God bestowed upon us the blessings of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These freedoms affirm that every American deserves the opportunity to live in safety, enjoy the freedoms of expression and belief, and pursue a fulfilling life. These enduring freedoms have been preserved through the courage and sacrifice of generations who fought to protect them, and they remain a responsibility for each of us to defend. 

 

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, may we cherish these blessings and remain committed to building a stronger nation for future generations.
