$2M for Amite River Basin flood mitigation secured, Rep. Julia Letlow says
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana Rep. Julia Letlow announced that $2 million secured will go to the Amite River Basin project for flood mitigation.
According to Letlow’s office, President Donald Trump signed funding into law after it cleared Congress Tuesday night. The Amite River Basin Drainage and Water Conservation District will administer the funds for the upper river flood reduction and restoration project.
“One of the biggest issues facing the Capital Region is protecting our communities from the dangerous flooding that Louisianans know all too well,” Letlow said. “This significant funding is a key step toward supporting flood mitigation efforts along the Amite River. I’m committed to continuing to deliver targeted support for South Louisiana’s needs through my seat on the Appropriations Committee.”
A comprehensive regional plan to address Amite River Basin flooding was approved earlier this year. The plan has 13 projects, which overall aim to cut flood losses, revise flood maps, and lower flood insurance premiums.
“Rep. Letlow is the Amite River Basin Commission’s strong partner in lowering flood risk in the Capital Region,” Amite River Basin Commission President John Clark said. “The funds she secured will help us restore the Amite River’s flood storage capacity and help protect lives, homes and communities.”
