Keep an Eye on the Forecasts
With storms on the move throughout Hurricane Season, it’s important to keep a close watch on the forecasts. In addition to following your local TV and radio reports, you can find the latest forecast information from the National Hurricane Center online at nhc.noaa.gov.
Know the Warnings
If a storm is projected to make landfall in Louisiana, it’s important to know the different warnings issued by forecasters.
- Tropical Storm Watch: A storm with maximum sustained winds of 73 mph is anticipated in the area within 48 hours.
- Tropical Storm Warning: A storm with maximum sustained winds of 73 mph is imminent or already occurring.
- Hurricane Watch: A hurricane with minimum sustained winds of 74 mph is anticipated in the area within 48 hours.
- Hurricane Warning: A hurricane with minimum sustained winds of 74 mph is imminent or already occurring.
What Can I Expect?
- Category 1 – 74-95 mph winds
- Category 2 – 96-110 mph winds
- Category 3 – 111-130 mph winds
- Category 4 – 131-155 mph winds
- Category 5 – 155+ mph winds
*Inland flooding is also possible in our region.

Throughout the storm, it is important to make sure you’re following updates from state and local officials. For the latest information and guidance, visit emergency.louisiana.gov.
Know your Evacuation Route
In the event you and your family need to evacuate, make sure to know your destination and map out a route ahead of time. For the most up-to-date road conditions and traffic information, visit 511.la.org or call 511.

Sheltering Safely at Home
If you are going to ride out the storm, it is essential to make sure your home is secured.
- Bring in outdoor furniture, toys, or other loose items on your property.
- Clean gutters and drains around your home.
- Have three days’ worth of food and water ready.
- Charge your cellphone and other electronic devices.
- Review critical documents such as your insurance coverage.
- Take photos for insurance purposes.
- Test your generator and make sure you have enough fuel for a sustained power outage in your area.
